Una Kim

 

Una Kim is a registered Korean literature and language teacher at the Korean educational department. She has close to 20 years' teaching experience at high schools within Korea and has been rewarded many times as a 'Best Teacher'. Her teaching skills are highly regarded both by teachers and students as well. She is creative and this creative attitude influences positively in her class by making various teaching materials and method. Her students appreciate her fun way of teaching and are never bored.

Una is also a writer who has published a number of books regarding Korean literature and won many Korean essay competitions.

Her masters' theme was about foreigners who want to learn Korean. In her thesis, she analysed the difficulties foreign students have when they study Korean. She found that a lack of cultural knowledge caused difficulties for them to understand Korean language. She grafted Korean culture into their studying materials and this approach was highly recommended by professors for Korean teachers, as their teaching resource.

She thinks that live Korean is very important when studying Korean, even from the beginning steps. Her class is focused on speaking and listening. Open mouth (speaking) is an essential part of her class; Una also tries to have students memorise words and expressions in the classroom through repeated practices. Her classes don't just work with a text book, but also incorporate Korean songs, interesting old stories and Una's wide range of knowledge as a literature teacher.

She has had previous Korean teaching experience in New Zealand. She is a natural at teaching!

Una Kim is very interested in cooking as well. In particular she's very knowledgeable about Korean traditional foods which have been remarked as a healthy natural food. She uses the Korean traditional ways of cooking which distinguishes her cookignnfrom others.  She likes to use natural ingredients such as fruits, baked salt, leaves, roots and herbs for various flavours, instead of instant commercial seasonings. She even makes various Korean fermented pastes which are well known and very hard to make at home. This is evidence of her passion for traditional food.
