Japanese-style pottery is an entirely different approach to throwing clay and this course introduces you to the basics of this fantastic method and gives you the chance to create your own unique ceramic piece. All materials included. (Held at Wellington Potters' Association, 130 Grant Road, Thorndon).
Suitable for both beginners and those with more experience who want to challenge their skills and knowledge, you'll learn more about the fundamental principles behind this technique which involves using larger amounts of clay, a clockwise-turning wheel and each work being thrown on a "hump" of clay which allows for multiple pieces to be created at a time.
This opens up an entirely different approach to pottery - even if you don't take to the throwing technique, this will be good practice in wedging and centering large volumes of clay. The overall design of each piece will base itself on the beauty of simple, natural shapes and forms which will greatly benefit anyone interested in creating their own contemporary pieces.
We will also cover the process of glazing, to make sure every work is unique and memorable.
