Build Your Own e-Bike

Whether your motivation is cost or customisation, this introductory course is for anyone considering converting a push-bike into an e-bike. We will cover pros/cons of conversion, intended use and component selection, parts-buying tips, batteries and range, installation, safety, general maintenance and options for further tweaks.

Description

Are you thinking of jumping on the e-bike revolution but not sure whether to convert an existing bike or buy a purpose-built one? While an ever-increasing range of manufactured e bikes are available, they can have an eye-watering sticker price or offer limited options for customisation and home maintenance.

Electrifying an existing bike is a job well within the skills and capabilities of most people, it does not require a huge investment in tools, and can be an absorbing and satisfying project. The refit itself is often done in an hour or two - the majority of time is spent upfront determining what components are required to build an e-bike that is safe, reliable and meets your needs and budget.

Please bring note-taking material or laptop.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Decide whether an e-bike conversion is right for you and choose a bike that will match your needs.
  • Determine your battery requirements (range and performance).
  • Identify the components you need.
  • Avoid common (and potentially costly) mistakes and plan and carry out an e-bike conversion.
  • Anticipate and perform basic maintenance tasks.
  • Consider some more advanced tweaks for your ride.
