Writing and Publishing Non-Fiction

In this course you will learn essential skills for all forms of factual writing, including essays, biographies, histories, magazine or newspaper articles and more. You will also learn the basics of publishing with various kinds of outlets.

Description

Non-fiction covers a huge range of genres and writing styles, but all forms of factual writing have some things in common: they all require solid research, an understanding of your audience, and a clear and informative authorial style.

Have you ever wanted to submit a newspaper article, write an opinion piece for a magazine, compile a local history, or even publish a book on a subject that interests and inspires you? This course is no replacement for expertise in any field, but it can show you some simple techniques to present your existing ideas, insight and expertise in a way that will inform your readers and avoid common pitfalls that can confuse or mislead your audience.

The message of this course is simple: everyone is smart enough to develop and present ideas, given enough time for research, and an openness to constructive feedback.

Participants are encouraged to come to this course with a goal in mind, such as being published in a newspaper, online outlet, academic journal, or submitting a book proposal. However, those without a publishing goal are also welcome as alternative final tasks will be available.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Explain the forms of non-fiction writing and their conventions.
- Research topics thoroughly and learn to avoid unreliable information.
- Develop and write a thesis and expand upon it through argumentation.
- Practice responsible authorship and avoid misleading audiences.
- Identify publications that are reliable, with responsible editorship.
- Review the process of publishing with various outlets.
