Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa

About 1 in 5 New Zealand adults experience a common mental illness each year. Understanding how to talk about mental health and help someone in need are important skills. This certified Mental Health First Aid course, will teach you the skills and knowledge to recognise and respond to someone experiencing mental health challenges. Course fees: If you are a NZ citizen/Permanent Resident Visa the course fee is $199 (evidence of eligibility required). Others pay $499.

Description

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based workshop which gives people the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their whānau, co-workers and community and help guide them to professional help if needed.

You will learn to recognise common mental health challenges, how to provide initial help to someone experiencing a mental health challenge using a practical, evidence-based action plan, and how to respond in a crisis situation. During the workshop you will have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment.

Mental health challenges covered in the course include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental Health Crisis Covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non- Suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attack
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects from Alcohol or other substance use
  • Aggressive behaviours

People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete a short online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider. You must attend the full two days to be able to do the online assessment for accreditation. The accreditation is valid for three years.

If you choose not to be accredited, you will receive a certificate of participation if you attend the full course. You will also receive a workbook as part of your course fee.

A condition of enrolment is that you must provide photo ID when you attend, unless you have already provided your NSN number at the time of registration (in which case photo ID is not required).

Note:  Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel.
