Genealogy - Basics of ancestry.com DNA tests

Have you done a DNA test with ancestry.com? Don't know what to do next? This course will cover the basics of what your DNA results mean. We'll look at the tools available on Ancestry.com and other DNA websites to help you use DNA for your family's history.

Description

Note: All computer courses are run in the school computer labs and you are required to use the school desktops for the duration of the course (you are not able to use your own laptop).  Some of the courses may require you to login onto the network.

Got your test results back and still wondering what a centiMorgan or a shared match is?  Find out what the size of your match means and the tools available to help you work out possible family relationships.

We'll start by looking at Clustering and how the Grouping tool on Ancestry.com can help with this.  We'll also look at the ThruLines and Common Ancestors tools to see how they can provide suggestions for knocking down brick walls in your research.

Also covered during this course are other websites you can upload your results to, how to manage other family member's DNA test results and other tools available when you get a bit more advanced - and just in case you need help in the future, we'll look at some of the places you could get this from.

Please note:  this course will only cover DNA tests taken through Ancestry.com

Bring a USB stick and your Ancestry.com login details.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
-  Understand the information provided by Ancestry.com about your DNA matches
-  Use the Grouping, ThruLines and Common Ancestors tools on Ancestry.com
-  Use the Shared CentiMorgan tool on DNAPainter.com
-  Understand where to find other tools
-  Understand the options for using other DNA websites
-  Understand where to get further help

Note:  Courses need a minimum number to go ahead so if we don't have enough enrolments a few days before the start date, we have to cancel. We'll let you know by email so please check yours regularly. If you need to cancel your registration, here are our terms and conditions: "What You Need to Know".
