Description

Have you recently started riding a bike and want to make sure you can take care of it properly? Or have you been riding for ages, but have always been scared to fix anything yourself?

Are you unsure of how to pump your tyres, or how much oil your chain needs? Find yourself fumbling for words when trying to describe that clunking sound to the guy in the bike shop?

This one day course lays bare the nuts and bolts of bicycle mechanics for absolute beginners, as well as those with a little experience. Through practical experience working with your own bicycle, you will find out what needs to be done to keep it running smoothly. We’ll cover what to look out for when things start to wear out, and how to check for problems, so you can be confident your bicycle is safe to ride. You will also learn how to fix some of the most common mechanical problems, and learn about the correct terminology and tools to use.

Those who feel intimidated in bike shops are especially welcome in this course. No question is a stupid question!

Bringing a bike to work on is essential, preferably one that you are riding regularly, because the best way to learn is by building familiarity with your own ride. E-bikes are welcome, although the extra weight can mean they are more challenging to work on. Regardless of whether your bike is in pristine condition, or desperately in need of TLC, it is welcome on the course – bikes showing a bit more wear can be useful for the learning of the whole group.

Bring your pushbike along on the day.  If you have the following, please bring them as well:  A multi-tool and pump; chain oil and rag; lightweight close-fitting gardening or rubber gloves.

(Please note this course is not exhaustive and is not a professional training course).

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Name most parts of a bicycle correctly
- Perform a quick safety check on any bicycle
- Fix a flat tyre
- Adjust your bike to fit your body
- Oil and clean your chain
- Identify and fix some common brake problems
