Zine Making - Introduction

Join our fun hands-on introduction to creating your own zine booklets. What are Zines you might ask? Short for magazines, ‘zines’ are DIY booklets, and often share niche knowledge or interests. Zines can feature pretty much anything you like - from recipe collections to poems, artworks, short stories, book or movie reviews and more.

Zine Making - Introduction

In this workshop you will be guided in making a classic cut and fold 8-page zine from a standard A4 sheet of paper - this is a clever design you can easily photocopy and reproduce later! You will be introduced to a range of techniques and approaches such as cut and paste photos and text, collage and drawing on paper.

If you’re keen to make more zines and share them with the world, there's a broad and growing community of Zine-makers and traders, as well as the well-attended annual Wellington Zinefest!

Paper, newspapers, magazines and basic drawing materials will be provided. We recommend you bring along a sketch book and any favourite drawing materials, newspapers, magazines or other interesting paper material to cut up and collage with in class.

Tea and coffee provided, please bring your lunch.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Cut and fold a classic 8-page zine format from a single sheet of paper
  • Brainstorm content ideas for your personalised zine publications
  • Arrange & compose text and images to fit a classic 8-page zine layout
  • Combine cut & paste magazine content with hand drawn/ written content
  • Create a draft zine of your personal interests
